This coming week at Brooklyn Brooklyn Rotary: Combating domestic violence with Dawn Diaz

Dawn Diaz

Dawn Diaz, pictured at last year’s Mothers Day rally at Cadman Plaza Park, will be this Thursday’s speaker

The guest speaker at this week’s Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club luncheon meeting [Thursday, March 13, 12:15–1:30] will be Dawn Diaz, founder of Milagros Day Worldwide, an organization that helps survivors of domestic violence and people who grew up in abusive households.

Her goal: To empower women around the world to break a cycle that she and her mother both experienced.

Brooklyn Bridge Rotarian Marc Dana reports that Ms. Dias “is a very dear friend of mine, a phenomenal speaker, with a heart of gold, who is dedicated to service.  Please put word out to the club so we can have a great turnout!”

News12 covered Milagros’ Mothers Day march across the Brooklyn Bridge last year, interviewing both Ms. Diaz and Mayor deBlazio’s wife, Chirlane Mczray, who is a vociferous supporter of Ms. Diaz’s efforts.

In the video linked below, Ms. Dias speaks on BronxNet:

The snowed-out Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club Wine and Cheese party to support the Park Slope-based Frances Residency at CHIPS will take place on WEDNESDAY, April 2.

This time, we trust that the weather will cooperate (maybe some rain — after all, it will be April — but no snow!)

Several Brooklyn Rotarians have been volunteering at Frances,  a  unique facility that serves homeless mothers and their newborns. and the club has been supportive financially. With this event, the club hopes to raise wider awareness of the Frances Residency’s important work, and  facilitate increased financial aid.

When: WEDNESDAY, April 2, 6–8 pm

Where: Mara’s Cafe and Bakery88 Livingston St., Downtown Brooklyn

Price: $25 per person

Pay now by credit card [use payment form below] or by cash or check at the door.

Help spread the love in raising funds as well as hope for homeless moms and their newborns. Additional donations are welcomed. The Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club will absorb all costs associated with this event, and all proceeds will go to Frances Residency.

For more information contact Rotarian Sandra Dowling at 718-237-2176 or Frances Residency at CHIPS coordinator Ann McLeod at 718-855-8861.
