Message regarding impact of Hurricane Sandy: Rotary is here to help

Brooklyn Paper photo by Paul Martina

Greetings, Fellow Rotarians.

This message is especially for members of Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club, and to our friends at the Brooklyn, Verrazano, Flushing and New York  Rotary clubs. I hope all of you are well! If not, we are here to help.

If anyone knows of any other rotarian besides Astrudge McLean and myself who were affected by the storm, please let us know what we can do to help out in these troubled times. If you have a close friend who also needs some assistance, this includes them too.

Sandra Dowling, this includes your friend out in Sea Gate. Together we can make a difference and accomplish more.

Rotarian Astrudge McLean’s home in Coney Island sustained foundational and extensive water damaged. The home in Sea Gate of a friend of Rotarian Sandra Dowling was damaged; I believe it is inhabitable. Homeowners insurance usually doesn’t cover everything. My home sustained damage from a fallen tree; however, I am covered and need no assistance.

Now is the time we can help. I am asking all the leaders of our adjoining Rotary clubs to set aside funds to help our fellow members and close acquaintances in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Service Above Self is our motto. Let us put it in motion now.

President, Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club

  1. Vivian:
The Canton Rotary Club in Canton, NY is hoping to help those of our Rotary family downstate who have been affected by this severe disaster. I was able to connect with a Rotary Club in Babylon, but the contact person was handling insurance claims and directed me to President Kathy Moore from that club and I am waiting to hear from her.

What do your folks need and how can we help? We are mobilizing with other clubs in the North Country. Let us know how to proceed.

Greetings fellow Rotarians. Thank you for your quick reply. What we need most in terms of relief are funds to help rotarians complete repairs that their insurance company will not cover. We have locally mobalized some contractors to help with stabalizing properties until the claims can be processed by the various insurance companies and by FEMA. We are collecting and purchasing cleaning products for rotarians to began the clean up of their property. Some need nonperishable items like shelf stable milk products, protein products in cans, paper towels, disinfectants and bottled water.

The easiest way to help is to provide some monetary doantion to aid in the relief. The Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club will use these funds to take care of the items listed above. So, please make your check payable to: The Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club (Hurrican Sandy Relief) in the memo section of your check. Please send the check to 124 Atlantic Avenue, Suite P3D, Brooklyn, New York 11201. Attn: Vivian Hardison, President.

We thank you all in advance of your help. If anyone needs to speak to me directly, please contact me at (917) 804-0797.

      Sincerely yours in Rotary,
      Vivian Hardison,
President of the Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club

  2. I am so sorry to hear about the sufferings of Rotarians & others caused by Sandy.
Chittagong in Bangladesh has been continously ravaged in the past by these massive storms & tidal waves & having gone out to give succor to the suffering people from Rotary Club of Agrabad we r privy to the damage ,the mental sufferings & the fear these massive storms & tidal waves incur.
However my heartfelt thoughts remain with your Club members & the sufferers.
Even today in the Rotary Club(Rotary club of Dhaka Midcity) meeting I raised the issue of at least expressing our feelings to people suffering out there if not materially. then by sharing our thoughts of concern with them.
Do you think that Oral saline powder in Sachets & water purification tablets could b of any help in the situation?

    Thanks !
You ( your members+sufferers) remain in our thoughts!
    Thanks & regards
